You might have heard in the news lately that many high profile companies such as Sony, Home Depot, Staples, K-mart, and even our government's systems had been compromised. You be surprised that almost 100% of small businesses were hacked. In fact, it is hard to find any small businesses in our own client base today which had not been attacked by intruders from the outside.
Lately, things are much worse. We are seeing a typical server exposed to the Internet would attract hundreds of attempts a day up from just a dozen attempts a day a few years ago. These hacking attempts not only slows down your server and causes intermittent problems but when the hackers do break in, they can be downright detrimental.
With so much hacking , we recommend never to directly expose your equipment, particularly remote desktops, to the Internet. We recommend always use some kind of 2 or 3 stage VPN to log on to your equipment. And, we recommend that you always run your business equipment through a smart router of some sort, instead of a dumb router.
To deal with attackers, ECL Computing had created a "smart" router. It is a security appliance that has the following additional abilities over a dumb router.
Almost all our mission critical and highly secured clients have smart routers installed. Please contact us to see if you should use one of these smart routers.
